A One-Way Trip to Mars

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — April 25, 2013 — As thousands of people worldwide apply to be astronauts with the Mars One project, a TV anchor recently interviewed Adknowledge CEO Ben Legg to find out why his company sponsored the Mars colonization plan. What is Mars One? As reported by Mashable, CNN, NBC and even David Letterman, it’s a plan to put citizen-astronauts on the surface of Mars in 2023. The whole process—from astronaut selection and training to a live feed of Martian living—is designed to be out-of-this-world reality TV. According to Bas Lansdorp, CEO of Mars One, everyone on this planet would be glued to their screens, watching the latest progress on that planet. “It will create a new generation of heroes – the first explorers to go to Mars will step straight into the history books,” Lansdorp said in a news release. “We expect it to capture an audience of millions, culminating in several billion online spectators when the first crew lands on Mars.”

There is a slight catch for the volunteer astronauts: there’s no way home. With no technologically easy or cost-effective way to provide a round-trip ticket, Mars will be the final stop for some daring human beings. But when you really think about it, all space travel comes with enormous risk; at least those involved with Mars One know, up front, that Earth will always remain in their cosmic rear-view mirror.
